Black Star Co-op is the world’s first cooperatively-owned and worker self-managed brewpub. They are owned by a community of more than 3,000 individuals and organizations, and is democratically managed by their Workers' Assembly. As the first enterprise of this type, Black Star Co-op seeks to realize an alternative business model for brewpubs and to help expand the co-operative movement into new and innovative areas, both in Austin, TX and around the world.
Black Star Co-op's desire to serve locally sourced and sustainably produced foods is met by a community of conscientious Texas farmers and ranchers who are devoted to the same principals. The Co-op is certified LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council, the first brew pub to achieve this honor.
Daily business operations at Black Star Co-op are managed by a professional staff, organized as the Workers’ Assembly. The Workers’ Assembly functions as a democratically self-managed workplace, meaning that all workers have a voice in the operations of the Co-op. All workers are paid a fair living wage and are provided excellent benefits during their employment.
