The amount of food required to eliminate hunger in the US is only 5 billion pounds annually. This means that if just 5% of food was recovered, it would equal a days worth of food for 4 million people; recovery of 25% would feed 20 million. In America, we get the power of choice. Not everyone does. Having traveled the world, we all experienced profound food waste with research showing very little being done to support a sustainable cycle of consumption. Enter Halfsies, a social initiative that addresses three core issues: food waste, poor health related to overconsumption and food insecurity to turn the simple act of dining out into a charitable opportunity. By repurposing resources that are currently being wasted, Halfsies kicked off its pilot program in Austin, Texas earlier this year offering a choice to restaurant-goers that reduces food waste and supports the fight against hunger while providing a healthier portion size.
