TGW Business Spotlight: Cupanion

We came across Cupanion on a whim a couple of months ago when we spotted one of their products on a grocery shopping trip. After doing some research, we found out that they were also B Corp certified and that they've donated over 2 million cups of clean water. Cupanion's products range from hot travel mugs to cold beverage containers. We recently interviewed Cupanion to find out more about them, their B Corp certification, and what their future looks like. 

Where did Cupanion start and how has it grown over the years?

C: Cupanion started in 2009 with the mission to inspire the world to reuse. We started by building a line of eco drinkware that is durable, functional, and affordable that would get people excited to reuse. In 2015, we took reuse to the next level by launching our Cupanion Rewards program on college and university campuses. Cupanion Rewards is a smartphone app that allows students to track their reuse and earn rewards on campus. In 2016, we expanded our Cupanion Rewards program to corporate offices as a way to engage and motivate employees in their company's waste reduction initiatives. At Cupanion our goal is to not only build products but programs that get people excited about reuse. We can't wait to see what 2017 has in store for Cupanion.

What was the process like to get B Corp Certified and how has it changed Cupanion?

C: The process to become B-Corp certified is long but extremely rewarding. The certification process helped us determine where we were exceeding and where we needed to improve environmentally as well as socially. Being B-Corp certified holds us accountable to social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. 

What does social good mean to Cupanion?

C: At Cupanion we believe in the motto think locally, act globally. Locally, we work with our local communities to build relationships that are both economically and environmentally beneficial. Globally we are trying to help alleviate the water crisis by working with charities like WaterAid Canada to provide clean water to people in need. WaterAid Canada works to improve access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in some of the world’s poorest communities.

What does the future look like for Cupanion?

C: At Cupanion our mission is to inspire the world to reuse and we want to continue to build programs as well as products that inspire people around the world  to reuse. Our goal is to change how people view reuse, we want people and organizations to understand that reuse is an effective way to help the environment and reduce costs at the same time.

Can you talk about what it’s like to donate over 2 million cups of clean water and what the impact has been like?

C: We are extremely proud that we have given over 2 million cups of clean water to people in need. We appreciate the support we receive from our customers, without them we would not have been able to reach our goal. We also couldn’t have reached our goal without our partnership with WaterAid Canada. They’ve put our contribution to good use by providing communities with safe and sustainable water sources, along with hygiene and sanitation education.
